July 6 2008 -- The largest ponderosa and Newberry Caldera
Traveling south from Bend, Oregon, we turn off for the scenic loop- Cascade Lake Scenic Hwy. We first head for La Pine State Park where we can see the largest Ponderosa in Oregon.
Standing 162 feet, it was in a grove of trees that provided a stately quiet that was reminiscent of the Sequoia Natl forest in California.
Then on to Paulina Lake in the middle of the Newberry Caldera. We got a great Forest Service campsite, and despite the mosquitoes, had a very pleasant evening.
