Is it an Oasis? -- Nope Barstow -- The trip home

On May 5 we had set out on our way home from Zion. We left California in April with high winds and thunderstorms pummeling us, and we returned to California the same way. The crosswinds were so fierce we had to find a desert oasis...the KOA in Barstow (we used to laugh when we went by). It was actually a nice park with mature trees that made for quite a windbreak.

Here is what lay just beyond the protective trees.


On May 6, it was on to San Luis Obispo. At Lost Hills, where we got our first fill up, we refilled for the last time and calculated our fuel mileage --- We had gone about 3300 miles and averaged 18.8 MILES PER GALLON!!! On one wind aided leg, I averaged 23 mpg, and against the wind it was about 16 mpg. We paid as low as $3 a night for campgrounds to just over $30 (they had us in Barstow). Alexa loves to rationalize the rv purchase with how much we "save" in travel. Even with the high price of fuel, our trip with all its exotic destinations averaged $36/day (fuel, food and first class lodging). Alexa should be a spokes person for Winnebago.
