5/18 Hiway 14 to Zion (68 degrees to 98 degrees)

We decided to head out to Zion taking a new route, highway 14 past Cedar Breaks. Of course Cedar Breaks was closed until the end of the month, but we decided to check out campgrounds along the way. We took a gravel road to a campground near Navajo Lake.....with all this snow it was closed. That did not stop the fisherguys -- they were out in shirt sleeves catching rainbow trout in the lake (which doesn't have an outlet stream but rather sink holes that emerge at a falls several miles away). We didn't bring our snowshoes so we did not take that hike.



Here's picture of Zion in the distance that one rarely sees. That is because it is from the overlook on Highway 14 to the north.



And I'll bet those familiar with Zion will not recognize the scene above. That is because it is a part of the park that is separated from the main floor. This is Kolob Canyon off of I-15. And it was beginning to get warm -- high 90's. It was only 68 degrees in the sun at Navajo Lake.


As we descended down I-15 towards Saint George, it got hotter and hotter. We decided to duck off the road at the tiny little town of Leeds, Utah. We found a rv park attached to a small motel. There are lots of semi-permanent folks there. The rig to our left contained a couple from Wisconsin waiting for the new house they bought to close. They had had it with Wisconsin winters. Alexa is trying out our super light weight barbeque. She also met a charming Hungarian woman who at age 59 decided to live in a one room cabin near Sisters, Oregon for SEVEN years. She is a fascinating woman and lives in a fifth wheel. Her son, a solar systems engineer, also lives in the park. During the summer, she moves the fifth wheel up to a reservoir just above Lava Point.
