June 3 - A very long short cut to Arches - Gateway Colorado

The volunteer at the Visitors Center recommended that we not travel to Arches today the easy way -- but suggested that we take another circuitous route that would take us through Gateway, Colorado. Apparently the founder of the Discovery Channel has created a resort in the middle of nowhere and put a first class car museum there to boot.



The setting was surprisingly spectacular, and the car museum quite a treat -- cars as far back as 1906.

So far so good, but apparently the lady who recommended the route had never actually gone the rest of the way from Gateway around the LaSalle Mountains to Moab. It was over a sometimes narrow and backcountry roads. About half way there, we did find the middle of nowhere. Our GPS unit got confused and tried to route us through a short cut that involved 4 wheel drive dirt roads. Fortunately, the scenery was pretty and there were few vehicles. When we finally got to our destination, Moab, I took this picture of the mountains we had crossed.
